Library Board Meeting

MINUTES of the October 12, 2011 meeting of the Pitkin County Library Board of Trustees.

ROLL CALL:  Trustees present:  Barbara Reid, John Wilkinson, Judi Harris, Elissa Taylor, Judy Wrigley, Austine Stitt, Jim Moran, and County Librarian Kathy Chandler.  

MINUTES:  Judy Wrigley moved that the minutes of the September 14, 2011 meeting be approved.  Austine Stitt seconded the motion.  The motion carried unanimously.  

PUBLIC COMMENT:  There was no public comment.

LIBRARIAN'S REPORT:  

-20th Anniversary Open House on Sept. 21, 2011 had an estimated 100 people in attendance between the 2 sessions with the architects and over 100 people were in attendance for birthday cake!  Jimmy Thomas, Executive Director of Marmot and Colorado Librarian of the Year, made a keynote address on how libraries are changing, and reps from Ebsco and Recorded Books made presentations.

OLD BUSINESS:  

-Negotiations with Nina Eisenstat:  Nina does not currently carry liability insurance that the Library and County require.  The library has asked Nina to re-submit her price to include her cost of liability insurance and the library will review this new price.

-Building approval process:  The architects are hopeful that the library will be able to move through Planning and Zoning and City Council in one cycle instead of the usual two.  This would save some money.

NEW BUSINESS: 

-Colorado Association of Libraries Annual Conference will be in Loveland this week.  Many of the library staff will be in attendance.

-Review of meetings with Rachel Richards:  Barbara Reid and Kathy Chandler met with Rachel and received some tips on the public process.  Rachel advised using a 13 month calendar, activating allies, diversifying public relations, verifying the interest rates for 15 and 20 year notes, and recognizing objections and providing answers to those objections.
