MINUTES of the regular meeting of the Pitkin County Library Board of Trustees on August 14, 2019. The meeting was called to order at 12:04 p.m.

ROLL CALL:  Trustees present: John Keleher, John Wilkinson, Judy Wrigley, Judi Harris, Barbara Reid, Barbara Smith, Austine Stitt, and alternate Elizabeth Nix. Also attending was Kathy Chandler.

PUBLIC COMMENT: There was no public comment.

APPROVAL OF MINUTES: A motion was made by Austine Stitt and seconded by Barbara Smith to approve the Minutes of the meeting on July 10, 2019.  The motion was passed unanimously.

TRUSTEE COMMENTS:  John Wilkinson brought in art books to share with the Board, and mention was made about a recent article discussing the hiring of social workers to deal with problems in some libraries.

OLD BUSINESS: There was discussion about our asking Chandler Asset Management to return in order to discuss in more detail how the Board would like to see our funds invested. Hopefully, this will occur at the next scheduled Board meeting.

LIBRARIAN’S REPORT: The Board agrees to designate Veterans’ Day and Presidents’ Day for staff training and to close the library on those days.  The Board also decided that the library could be closed in future years for 2 days that could be days other than those holidays.

The Board agreed to personally donate funds for the purchase of alcohol for Dave Gollon’s retirement reception September 12th from 4 to 6 p.m.

The Board went outside to see how the new City Office will impact the Library’s view plane.

Kathy Chandler spoke to Justin Brown from the Music Festival about the digitization project. Justin said that the Music Festival will continue to make CD’s and wants 2-3 years to consider this project. Marmot will meet with Justin in the fall. 

A motion was made by Judy Wrigley and seconded by John Keleher to grant Renate Weimann’s request to honor her sister Sigrid Stapleton’s memory with a plaque on one of the benches in front of the library. It was decided to also include their mother’s name given her long history with the library. The motion was passed unanimously. Renate and Sigrid’s mother, Renate Braun was in charge of the library in the mid 1960’s.

NEW BUSINESS: The Board examined the preliminary 2020 Budget. A motion was made by Judy Wrigley and seconded by Barbara Smith to approve the Preliminary Budget and was passed unanimously.

ADJOURNMENT: A motion was made by Judy Wrigley and seconded by John Wilkinson to adjourn the meeting at 1:30 p.m.
