September is Library Card Sign-Up Month!
This September, Pitkin County Library joins libraries across the country in celebrating Library Card Sign-Up Month and all the possibilities that begin with a library card.
The American Library Association's 2026 theme is “A library card hits all the right notes!” Whether your interests include a great book, a new movie, creative projects, learning a language, researching a topic, or simply finding a place to read and connect, your library card can help you find your rhythm.
Singer, songwriter, musician, and avid reader Laufey is serving as the 2026 honorary chair of Library Card Sign-Up Month. A lifelong library user and founder of the Laufey Book Club, she joins libraries nationwide this September in celebrating reading, creativity, community, and everything a library card can unlock.

Read, Listen & Watch
Find your next great read in the Library's collection or take the Library with you wherever you go.
Your card provides access to:
- Books, audiobooks, magazines, movies, and more.
- Libby for eBooks, eAudiobooks, and digital magazines.
- Hoopla for eBooks, audiobooks, music, movies, television, and comics.
- Kanopy for streaming movies, documentaries, and other video content.
Learn Something New
Compose your future by exploring resources for learning, research, professional development, and personal interests.
Use your library card to explore resources, including:
- LinkedIn Learning for online courses and professional development.
- Mango Languages and Rosetta Stone for language learning.
- LearningExpress Library for test preparation, career development, computer skills, and academic support.
- Consumer Reports for product reviews and buying guides.
- NoveList Plus to discover your next book.
- Digital newspapers, magazines, research databases, genealogy resources, and more.
Many Library resources are available online, so your card can connect you with the Library even when you aren't in the building.
Make Something
Your library card can also open the door to hands-on learning.

Library Card Sign-Up Month is not only about what you can check out. It is also about what you can experience.
The Pitkin County Library offers programs and opportunities throughout the year, including book clubs, author talks, workshops, technology assistance, films, crafts, concerts, children's programs, community events, and more.
Use meeting rooms and meeting pods to tutor or host lectures, or check out passes for the Maroon Bells and State Parks.
Your Library is a place to find like-minded library lovers.
Get a Library Card
Don't have a card yet? September is the perfect time to sign up.
Pitkin County Library cards are free for everyone.
Stop by the Library and speak with a staff member to get started. Applicants should bring photo identification. Children under age 13 may not receive a library card with authorization from a parent or legal guardian.
Visiting the Area?
You don't have to be a permanent Pitkin County resident to use the Library.
Visitors staying in the area for six months or less may be eligible for a temporary library card, valid for six months with the same borrowing privileges as a regular patron card.

Celebrate With Libraries Across the Country
Library Card Sign-Up Month has brought libraries together in a national celebration of library access since the campaign began in 1987.
For 2026, the American Library Association and honorary chair Laufey invite everyone to discover how a library card can “hit all the right notes”—from reading and creativity to learning, technology, and community.
