Description

Library Cinema takes place in the Dunaway Community Meeting Room. Doors open at 7PM, the film starts at 7:30PM. This is a special free screening with the Pitkin County Library Holiday Book Club!

Louisa May Alcott’s Classic novel has been adapted for the screen at least nine times, the first one dating from 1917. “What Greta Gerwig does with this very familiar tale is remarkable, and a little hard to describe. There’s a feeling of restoration to her film — shades of meaning are lightly brushed onto characters and scene so that, once you see them, you get the sense they must have been there all along. Some of the quibbles people have had with the book, about the bratty flatness of Amy’s character, or about how the romantic relationships unfold, are reconsidered with a depth of humanity and understanding of the time in which the book was written, infusing them with new life. Rather than try to replace the other versions, the film finds its own new way into the March sisters’ lives while remaining respectful and faithful to Alcott’s source material. And that makes it an instantly vital addition to the Little Women canon.” –Vox.com (USA 2019) 135min. PG
