This August we are bringing awareness to intellectual freedom by highlighting the censorship of graphic novels.
Intellectual Freedom is defined as the right of every individual to both seek and receive information from all points of view and all formats without restriction. It provides for free access to all expressions of ideas through which any and all sides of a question, cause, or movement may be explored (Garnar, Martin, and Trina J. Magi. Intellectual Freedom Manual. ALA Editions, 2015).
Censorship of library materials, such as graphic novels, infringes on an individual's right to intellectual freedom. For more information on intellectual freedom, censorship, and civil liberties visit our Intellectual Freedom information page.
In honor of graphic novels that have been challenged or banned in bookstores, school libraries, and public libraries we challenge you to push the limits! Read a challenged or banned graphic novel and research the reason why that material was removed or restricted. Listed below are some recommended graphic novels to get you started.
Why should comic books and graphic novels be in libraries?
Graphic novels and comic books are extremely popular among readers of all ages. The combination of literature and art appeals to many readers and is particularly good for English learners, people with dyslexia, and reluctant readers. Comic books and graphic novels provide a foundation for verbal and visual literacy, critical thinking, and memory. Read the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund's Banned Comics Handbook to learn more.

We encourage you to research why some graphic novels have been challenged or banned. The Comic Book Legal Defense Fund (CBLDF) is a great resource for understanding the censorship of graphic novels. They also provide educational and informational material on how to fight against censorship and defend your intellectual freedom rights.
