Film synopsis:
Steven Spielberg's West Side Story presents a new look at the classic musical that lives up to its beloved forebear -- and in some respects might even surpass it. Love at first sight strikes when young Tony spots Maria at a high school dance in 1957 New York City. Their burgeoning romance helps to fuel the fire between the warring Jets and Sharks -- two rival gangs vying for control of the streets. This Best Picture nominee is completed with the iconic Leonard Bernstein score. “It’s narrative, context and authenticity that give Spielberg's West Side Story its own verve. It most definitely still plays the hits, but the film feels less like a Broadway-to-screen transfer than a cinematic staging of a classic.” – Associated Press. “
"Mr. Spielberg did not waste his time-or ours. The new West Side Story is simply fabulous.” – Rex Reed. (USA 2021) 156 min. PG-13
