Welcome to Teen Summer Reading 2024! This year's theme is "Adventure Begins at Your Library" and we hope to encourage you to try new genres, new activities, or simply get out in nature. We have put together a number of events open to families and multiple age groups.

The 2024 Summer Reading Program consists of reading, activities and events in the Library, a writing challenge, and amazing prizes! There is one raffle for each of the three months that you can enter with the raffle tickets you earn throughout the summer.

The Teen Summer Reading Program is for ages 12-17.

Events (June)

Art Show Open Night

Wednesday, June 26 | 5pm-7pm | All Ages

To celebrate the 2024 Summer Reading Program, artwork created by local community members will be displayed in the library. Join us in the Hotpick Meeting Room for snacks and a tour of the pieces displayed throughout the library. The artwork will remain on display until Friday, August 9.

Teen Advisory Board Meeting

Wednesday, July 3 | 4:30pm-5:30pm | Ages 12-17

The Teen Advisory Board is an awesome group of teens who play a vital role in selecting our library collection's books, movies, and games for our library collection. T.A.B. also helps plan fun and exciting programs for teens. 

This meeting takes place in the Hotpick Meeting Room.

One-Shot Dungeons and Dragons

Tuesday, July 9 | 2pm-4pm | Ages 10+

Come with us on a magical adventure to test your problem solving skills and imagination in a fantasy setting as we learn to play Dungeons and Dragons! We'll teach you everything you need to know along the way in a fun, casual environment. Fear not, drop-ins are welcome during the campaign if you're up for learning as we go!

Campaign is run by library staff members.

Book Thieves Book Club: We Were Liars by E. Lockhart

Wednesday, July 10 | 4:30pm-5:30pm | Ages 12-17

Are you a book lover who is always on the lookout for new reads? Join the Book Thieves, a group of enthusiastic readers who meet monthly to discuss exciting young adult literature. Snack on delicious treats while exploring the books we provide.

This event takes place in the Hotpick Meeting Room.

Book to Film Nights: Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children

Wednesday, July 17 | 4:30pm-6:30pm | Ages 12-17

Join us in the Dunaway Community Room for a fun-filled evening every 3rd Wednesday of the month at 4:30pm. We show a movie based on a book, and of course, there will be plenty of popcorn to munch on!

Foam Party

Tuesday, July 23 | 2pm-3pm | All Ages

Get ready to get lost in mounds of foam at our annual foam party! Come dressed in bathing suits or clothes you feel comfortable getting wet in and wear non-slip shoes.

This event will take place outside the Library on the Galena Street Plaza.

Game Night

Wednesday, July 24 | 4:30pm-5:30pm | Ages 12-17

We would love for you to come and hang out with us in the Dunaway Community Room! You can enjoy some yummy food, play some Nintendo Switch games such as Mario Kart, Overcooked 1 & 2, and Switch Sports, or even join in on the fun with some board games!

Story Creations

Wednesday, July 30 | 10:30am-11:15am | Ages 2-17

Join us for stories, dog tricks, and more with Denise Gard and her two dogs, Joey and Kira. 

This event takes place in the Dunaway Community Room.

Summer Reading Closing Party

Wednesday, August 7 | 12pm-2pm | All Ages

Join us for our 2024 Summer Reading closing party! We will have snacks and fun games to help us celebrate another successful summer of reading and activities.

This event will take place outside the Library on the Galena Street Plaza.

Art Show Concludes

Friday, August 9 | 6pm | All Ages

The last day to view the Art Show. Come browse the pieces throughout the library!

Event takes place on the main floor of the library.

How to Win Raffle Tickets and Prizes

Physical books, ebooks, audiobooks, graphic novels, comics, and magazines all count towards your reading goal. Earn prizes and raffle tickets by telling a librarian at the main desk that you have advanced in your reading goal.

If you miss the kick-off party, you can still register for the Summer Reading Program at the main desk.

1st Level: Sign Up!

Three Tickets and Level 1 Prize

To receive three tickets register at the main desk and begin the first challenge. Your Level 1 Prize is a bookmark, three tickets, and a 2024 Teen Summer Reading booklet.

The three tickets will be entered in a June, July, or August raffle for a chance to win a monthly prize. You decide which raffles to put your tickets in.

2nd Level: Read 1 Book

Three Tickets and Level 2 Prize

To receive three tickets read one book and present your booklet at the main desk. Your Level 2 Prize is five stickers.

The three tickets will be entered in a June, July, or August raffle for a chance to win a monthly prize. You decide which raffles to put your tickets in.

3rd Level: Read 3 Books

Six Tickets and Level 3 Prize

To receive six tickets read five books and present your booklet at the main desk. Your Level 3 Prize is three pins.

The six tickets will be entered in a June, July, or August raffle for a chance to win a monthly prize. You decide which raffles to put your tickets in.

4th Level: Read 5 Books

Nine Tickets and Level 4 Prize

To receive nine tickets read five books and present your booklet at the main desk. Your Level 4 Prize is a bookish item.

The nine tickets will be entered in a June, July, or August raffle for a chance to win a monthly prize. You decide which raffles to put your tickets in.

5th Level: Read 10 Books

Twelve Tickets and Level 5 Prize

To receive twelve tickets read 10 books and present your booklet at the main desk. Your Level 5 Prize is a Squishmallow.

The twelve tickets will be entered in a June, July, or August raffle for a chance to win a monthly prize. You decide which raffles to put your tickets in.

6th Level: Read 20+ Books

Eighteen Tickets and Level 5 Prize

To receive eighteen tickets read twenty or more books and present your booklet at the main desk. Your Level 6 Prize is a choice of either a library embosser or sweatshirt.

The eighteen tickets will be entered in a June, July, or August raffle for a chance to win a monthly prize. You decide which raffles to put your tickets in.

The Audio Prize

The July monthly prize includes a pair of wireless headphones, a backpack, a book light, a water bottle, a first aid kit, a picnic blanket, and a Sound Cloud beach towel. The June raffle prize winner will be drawn on Sunday, June 30.

July Prize

The Crafty Prize

The July monthly prize includes a polaroid camera, a backpack, a book light, a water bottle, a first aid kit, a picnic blanket, and a Sound Cloud beach towel. The July raffle prize winner will be drawn on Wednesday, July 31.

August Prize

The Cozy Prize

The August monthly prize includes a kindle, a backpack, a book light, a water bottle, a first aid kit, a picnic blanket, and a Sound Cloud beach towel. The August raffle prize winner will be drawn on Wednesday, August 7.

Writing Challenge

Submit a short story or poem to earn one raffle ticket.

Prompts to choose from:

  • Someone exploring a new city.
  • Your character takes the long way home.
  • Your character is being led somewhere by a stray animal.
  • Someone has gone missing, but left behind clues.

Requirements

To be eligible for a raffle ticket, you must be in middle school or high school. The submission must be an original piece and have your age on it.
